On the day we were supposed to get our marriage license, Julian Vance left me standing alone outside City Hall.
On my way back, I passed the back door of a quiet diner on the street corner and saw him. He was peeling shrimp for Serena Ross.
Serena wore a simple white dress, her eyelashes still damp with tears.
A few mutual friends sat around them, joking half-heartedly:
"Julian, aren't you supposed to be at City Hall with Evelyn right now? Leaving her hanging like that—aren't you worried she'll actually walk away?"
