After the Ashes, She Chose the Dawn
Chapter 5
Daisy Lee POV
Numbly, I opened the link Olivia had sent.
The title of the post was written in bold red font: “Mother with Postpartum Depression Feeds Infant Alcohol While Drunk, Baby Girl Dies of Alcohol Poisoning!”
The poster wrote that I had been a long-term alcoholic, had lost control emotionally after giving birth, and had deliberately forced alcohol into my child.
Every single word was false, but my photo and phone number had been leaked.
The comment section exploded.
“How can someone like this be a mother? Go die.”
“That poor child had the worst luck being born into that family.”
“Someone should dox her and ruin her life.”
My phone started ringing, one unfamiliar number after another.
When I answered, the person on the other end immediately screamed, “Murderer, why don’t you go die?”
After I hung up, it rang again, and after I hung up again, it rang again.
Text messages also flooded in, each one more vicious than the last.
“I hope you can never have another child in this life.”
“Aren’t you afraid your child will come for your life at night?”
“Go die go die go die.”
All my strength drained away, and cold sweat soaked my back.
People came and went around me, and someone recognized me, pointing at me and whispering.
“That’s her, right? The one online who fed her baby alcohol…”
“Oh my God, she looks so normal, so how could she do something like that?”
“You really can’t know a person’s heart by looking at their face.”
All the slander pressed down on me like a giant mountain, but I did not defend myself and only held the child who had already lost her warmth tighter.
After an unknown amount of time, I handed my child’s body to the nurse and walked to the hospital rooftop alone.
The wind on the rooftop was strong, and I stood at the edge and looked down.
If I jumped, I would not have to face my daughter’s body.
If I jumped, I would not have to hear those people’s insults.
I took one step forward, but when the wind poured into my collar, I suddenly remembered my daughter’s face.
Her tiny mouth had opened in a grin, showing pink gums, and her eyes had curved into little crescents.
My body suddenly trembled, because if I jumped, who would avenge my daughter?
The people who had killed my daughter would keep living, without paying any price at all.
I crouched at the edge of the rooftop and cried without making a sound.
After an unknown amount of time, I walked down from the rooftop and took a cab home.
I had to take the camera away first and preserve some evidence.
But when I reached the downstairs entrance, I saw Nathan Reed’s mistress standing there.
Chloe Snow wore a white dress, her long hair falling over her shoulders, graceful and pretty.
“Daisy, I heard about everything online. Don’t be too upset. People online just follow the crowd, and they’ll forget in a few days.” Chloe Snow smiled just right.
I stopped walking. “What are you trying to say?”
“Your current reputation is bad for Professor Reed. If you really love him, shouldn’t you consider leaving him?”
Looking at that face pretending to be innocent, I suddenly wanted to laugh.
“Chloe Snow, what identity are you using to say this to me? His girlfriend? Or his mistress?”
Chloe’s smile froze for a moment, and then she simply stopped pretending.
“When you were pregnant, you cried and got angry over everything, and living with you was so painful for him that he came to me. You pushed him away yourself.”
“Did he tell you that his monthly salary is deposited into my account? That the house under his name is in my name? That he still hasn’t dared to bring up divorce with me? Do you know why?”
Chloe’s lips trembled.
“Because he can’t afford to divorce me. If he divorces me, he’ll leave with nothing, and when that happens, are you willing to support him?” I stared tightly at Chloe.
Chloe’s eyes turned red, and the resentment in them could not be hidden at all.
I continued, “Actually, you don’t love him. You love the title of ‘Professor Reed.’ If he were just an ordinary researcher, would you still sleep with him?”
“Shut up!” Chloe’s voice turned shrill. “With a mouth that nasty, be careful your daughter doesn’t get punished and die without a whole body!”
My hand clenched tight, and a burst of rage surged up instantly.
Slap.
Chloe’s head was knocked to the side.
“If you dare say one more word about my daughter, I’ll kill you.”
Chloe covered her face, and tears instantly poured out.
At that moment, Nathan Reed happened to come home and ran over when he saw the scene. “Daisy, why did you hit someone?”
He glanced at the red mark on Chloe’s face and looked quite displeased.
“I know you’re hurting, but what good does making a scene like this do anyone? Can’t you calm down for my sake?”
I sneered. “What the hell is she, coming in front of me to stir up trouble?”
Nathan looked at Chloe, and Chloe’s eyes immediately reddened.
“I was only worried about Professor Reed’s career. I didn’t mean anything else…”
Nathan waved his hand. “Chloe is just my colleague, and she meant well. Hitting someone is wrong. Your emotions have been very unstable lately, so you should see a doctor.”
I opened my mouth, only to find my throat felt blocked.
“Enough. Let’s talk inside.”
As Nathan spoke, he reached out to pull me, but I stepped back and avoided him.
Nathan’s hand froze in midair, and his face finally darkened.
He frowned. “How long are you going to keep making trouble?”
I looked at him heavily, with far too many emotions in that one look.
“Nathan Reed, I’m tired. Let’s get divorced.”
