Chapter 2

My husband Zane came in with breakfast.

Behind him was my sister-in-law Nora. They were laughing and chatting, looking very close.

My mother-in-law immediately changed her expression.

"Son, look at the kind of woman you married!"

"She watches the baby starve and won't feed him at all. Isn't she trying to starve my grandson to death?"

"Oh dear, how can such a heartless woman exist? I've never seen a mother like this in my whole life!"

I have to admit, my mother-in-law's acting skills could be taught in acting schools.

Just now, she looked like she wanted to tear me apart. Now, in front of her son, she pretends to be pitiful and kind.

Before Zane could speak, Nora jumped in:

"Sister-in-law, do you despise the baby for having a heart defect and being a burden, so you refuse to feed him?"

"You're so selfish. What kind of mother does this?"

Nora's accusation came first, labeling me as selfish and self-centered.

She has always been against me.

When Zane and I got married, she insisted I wasn't good enough for her brother and tried to block me from entering the family.

Who her brother marries, and she needs to agree?

At the wedding, Nora damaged my wedding dress, nearly embarrassing me in front of everyone.

I've never understood why she targets me.

Before she finished speaking, Zane tugged at her collar, signaling her to shut up.

Their little gestures didn't escape my notice. A terrifying suspicion crossed my mind.

Could there be something improper between Nora and Zane?

Zane came over to me, saying:

"Lydia isn't like that. You must be mistaken. Nora has been preparing for exams this year, so she's a bit stressed. Honey, don't mind her."

Zane placed the breakfast on my bedside.

He was clearly siding with Nora.

Speaking of exams, Nora had been renting a place to prepare for the civil service exam, especially in the past few months, she never showed up.

Could it be that she wasn't preparing for exams but for pregnancy?
