Chapter 4
Maybe it was fate's way of compensating me; while I was unlucky in love, I found success in my career.
I actually landed the lead female role in Director King's new drama. When my agent Vera brought me the good news, my first reaction was disbelief.
Director King is known for being notoriously strict in the industry.
It felt like my luck was turning...
And since that day, Declan kept sticking around, claiming he saved me and wanted to take me on as his student.
He said I was about to join Director King's crew and needed to seriously hone my acting skills.
I thought it made sense, plus Declan was handsome, wealthy, and fun to be around.
The thing that troubled me the most was probably his frequent requests for me to be his girlfriend.
But I knew deep down that to him, I was probably just a passing fancy.
One day, while we were seriously rehearsing a scene, I said, let's give it a try.
I wanted to escape the shadow Finn cast over me.
I once asked him why he liked me.
He patted my head and wouldn't tell me, saying he'd tell me the day I was willing to marry him.
I didn't believe he wanted to marry me.
Soon, it was time to join the film crew. In two days, the filming ceremony was set to begin, and the actors had already checked into the hotel arranged by the crew.
"Knock, knock, knock!" There was a knock at the door; it was Declan.
As soon as I opened the door, Declan scooped me up and carried me straight into the room.
He placed me on the bed, leaning in close, his lips inching toward mine.
Just then, there was another untimely knock on the door.
"Phoebe, open up!"
I shivered at the sound; it was Finn.
"You, hide quickly!" I shoved Declan off me, trying to get him to move.
"Why should I?" Declan didn't budge, "You two have broken up, and now I'm your boyfriend."
"No way, he can't find out about us!"
I was frantic. If Finn found out and spread the word about me and Declan as revenge, it would ruin me and affect Declan's career.
After all, he was a male star with zero tabloid rumors since his debut.
"Then just make us public, okay?"
Declan didn't move a muscle, even leaning closer, leaving my mind blank.
"No, no way."
With great effort, I pulled Declan off the bed and dragged him into the bathroom.
I pretended not to see his angry and aggrieved look.
"Be good. I'll think about it."
Only then did he stop opposing me, closing the bathroom door.
"Phoebe! Have you no shame? Hooking up with your lover in the film crew?"
As soon as I opened the door, Finn stormed in angrily.
"What are you doing here?"
"Lover? Where?" I asked innocently, waving my hand.
"I saw a guy walk into your room with my own eyes!"
My heart skipped a beat. I hadn't expected Finn to see Declan come into my room.
Finn looked around my room but found no one. Finally, he walked to the bathroom door.
My heart leapt into my throat.
"You think I'm that easy to fool?" Finn sneered when I didn't admit it, "Your lover must be hiding in the bathroom!"
