Chapter 3
The police asked for details, which I answered one by one.
But when they asked for evidence, I fell silent for a moment.
Time passed second by second, and the plane continued approaching the national border.
The police informed me again that stopping an international flight without cause would result in serious criminal liability.
The compensation alone would reach millions, and in severe cases, I could face imprisonment for maliciously affecting others and causing negative impact.
I pressed my hand against my pounding chest, hesitating for a moment.
If this was only my speculation, I would bear enormous debt and even face imprisonment.
But when my gaze shifted back to the photos, that momentary doubt vanished instantly.
My voice trembled but carried determination,
"I'm willing to bear all consequences, I only ask for the truth in return!"
As the police mobilized, I also brought Simons's work materials to the airport.
Time was pressing. I flipped through the materials in the car.
Instinct told me his business trip must be related to a major case he'd been investigating.
Simons was the editor-in-chief of TRUE newspaper. He'd recently been investigating a serial murder case from ten years ago.
This business trip was also to meet the only witness from back then, to do an updated report.
Everything seemed completely normal.
I quickly flipped through the materials but found no problems at all.
And his rigidly scheduled timetable also corresponded perfectly with his work hours.
How could such a meticulous person have time for a seven-year affair?
Though I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, it would be a lie to say I wasn't hurt.
I placed the materials beside me, closed my eyes to rest, and let out a long sigh.
But the next moment, the driver slammed on the brakes.
Caught off guard, I crashed into the back of the seat, and the materials scattered on the floor.
I hurriedly bent down to pick them up, but in a hidden layer, I saw a sentence written in Simons's own handwriting.
[The ticket must be changed to one day later. He must be on the plane!]
The moment I saw the note, every hair on my body stood on end!
Even the driver's repeated apologies seemed distant to me.
Traffic was backed up at the airport entrance. I immediately opened the door, got out, and sprinted toward the arrival exit.
The police notified the airport's air traffic control, ordering Flight CZ3218 to return for inspection.
I sat in the waiting area clutching the materials, on edge every second.
My eyes locked onto the arrival exit as I wiped the cold sweat from my palms again and again.
Finally, before sunset, I heard the flight announcement.
"CZ3218 has returned!"
I immediately stood up, leaning against the edge of the arrival exit to watch.
The police led the passengers out. I hurriedly begged Captain Eric.
"Eric, please be sure to investigate the cause of Simons's death!"
I presented the materials with both hands,
"These are the major cases Simons was investigating. His death may very well be related to this!"
But Eric raised his hand to brush aside the materials I handed over, then turned to point toward the end of the line.
"Ms. Igor, your husband is at the end of the line."
"As for your false police report affecting the travel of 113 passengers, do you have any defense?"
I turned my head and met the gaze of the man in a trench coat walking at the very end of the crowd.
He wore the same smoke-gray trench coat Simons had chosen before leaving, his hand interlocked with that charming woman's fingers.
I heard my voice, light as snow.
"Impossible, he's not Simons..."
Clearly, the number of passengers on this flight was supposed to be 114!
